Why You Need to Pinpoint Your Purpose

If you watched or heard any part of the U.S. Inauguration of President Joe Biden yesterday, you likely heard Biden and others (National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman- wasn’t she awesome?) talk about one thing.

Choice.

Who we choose to be has everything to do with who we will become.
Regardless of your country of origin or where you now reside, we choose the words, behaviors and actions that represent our values:

Do we choose healing or hatred?

Democracy or divisiveness?

Justice or racism?

Unity or lawlessness?

These are not new questions. They are the persistent questions of our time as we evolve to a new understanding of the human relationship with the planetary future.

Especially Here, Especially Now

As Biden suggested, these questions are especially salient in the U.S., as we have historically struggled with the tension of the “American ideal that we are all created equal and the harsh, ugly reality that racism, nativism, fear, and demonization have long torn us apart.

The battle is perennial. Victory is never assured.”

Ms Gorman so eloquently shared that we are “a nation that isn’t broken but simply unfinished.. far from polished far from pristine but that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect.

We are striving to forge a union with purpose.”

That ‘we’ is each of us.

Each of us has more opportunity than ever to live into our purpose.

Not perfectly. Not necessarily with deep clarity, as it’s always evolving.

But we have to at least ask the questions that reflect the values we cherish, so that we can “live the questions now.” (Rainier Maria Rilke)

Who will you choose to be, in this time of great hope and horror?

Gorman again, capturing both the discord and the emergent dream:

“We did not feel prepared to be the heirs

of such a terrifying hour

but within it we found the power

to author a new chapter.”

What’s yours?
